Independent Living Skills (ILS) Services

To be referred to APTA's ILS, please contact your WRC service coordinator.

APTA's ILS program offer comprehensive training and support to empower adults with developmental disabilities to enhance their self-reliance while residing with family members and planning to transition to independent living.

Description of APTA's Independent Living Skills Services:

Home and Community Safety

APTA will offer guidance and support about fire safety, disaster preparedness, kitchen safety, crime prevention, accessing emergency services, communicating with first responders, and ensuring the availability of emergency supplies.   

Hygiene/Grooming

APTA will offer instruction and assistance in enhancing personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, grooming, hygiene, and oral care.   

Health/First Aid Skills

APTA will offer support and assistance to facilitate the coordination and attendance of appointments, as well as the management of medication. We will also provide training to our clients to acquire a comprehensive understanding of fundamental first aid techniques.   

Food and Proper Nutirtion

APTA will offer guidance and support in organizing and preparing nutritious meals. Conduct the task of purchasing nutritious food items from the grocery store. We will Instruct our clients on the basic principles of food safety. The training will also cover the correct utilization of kitchen appliances.   

Household management

APTA will assist our clients in enhancing their adaptive skills that are essential for maintaining a high standard of living. Instances of this phenomenon include the successful execution of tasks related to maintaining a clean and organized household and other basic chores. 

Money Management

APTA will provide training in money management skills, including budgeting, bill payment, and saving, especially for individuals who lack the support of family members or legal representatives. 

Advocacy Skills

APTA will provide our clients with training in the skill of self-advocacy to guarantee their awareness and comprehension of their legal rights. APTA will diligently practice active listening and create an environment that encourages clients to freely share their opinions in various domains of life.  

Transportation

APTA will assist our clients locate generic resources that are appropriate for their transportation needs. APTA also aims to offer mobility training to our clients to enable them to get around their community safely and independently.   

Vocational Support

APTA will provide guidance and support to clients who choose to pursue an academic career or who are interested in full-time or part-time employment.   

Social-Recreation

APTA will foster social-recreational and leisure activities that can successfully promote the growth of peer-to-peer connections and strengthen the friendship network of our clients.
